Let’s get real.  AI makes writing MUCH faster and easier.  But it’s also cluttering the internet with derivative content copied and pasted directly from generative AI tools like ChatGPT.

Like most things, we must find a middle ground.  Somewhere between completely ignoring this technological breakthrough and completely handing over content creation to the machine lies a glorious, well-research, well-research, and well-written blog post that ranks in search engines.  And most importantly, visitors will enjoy reading it.

In writing over a hundred blogs for Upgrow and many of our clients, with and without AI help, I’ve honed the blog writing process and am sharing what has and hasn’t worked for me here.

So let’s get into it.

What Should You Blog About?

How to choose topics your readers will care about, will rank in search engines, and that you’ll be inspired to write.

There are two main approaches to blogs, and they often intersect:

  1. SEO Blogs: Articles aimed at targeting specific, relevant keywords.
  2. Thought Leadership Blogs: Articles highlighting an intriguing strategy, learning, trend, or insight.

We recommend beginning with a thought leadership theme and then identifying keywords related to that topic.

Once you decide to start blogging, generating ideas will become second nature. Maintain a running list in a Google Doc or notepad to jot down potential topics. When you’re ready to write, you’ll have many ideas.

Concepting Blog Topics

Here are a few ways to come up with blog post ideas to create content about.

  • Consider questions clients have asked that might be common among your audience.
  • Reflect on your own recent inquiries that could be widespread.
  • Share strategies or techniques that have been successful for clients.
  • Discuss new features or updates within your industry.
  • Address challenges you’ve overcome that others might face.
  • Explain processes you’ve mastered that could benefit others.
  • Offer insights into interesting strategies you’ve discovered.
  • Highlight exceptional landing pages, ads, emails, SEO approaches, tools, or resources that could inform others.
  • Utilize Google Search Console to identify keyword topics for fresh angles.
  • Keep up with major industry news sites for trending articles and think of unique perspectives on those topics.
  • Repurpose existing content, like case studies or detailed explanations, into blog posts.

Ensure Your Blog’s SEO Success

Not every blog needs to excel in SEO to be effective. Interesting content can attract readers through newsletters, social media, and direct shares. However, blogs with SEO potential have an added advantage.

Check for SEO Viability

  • Search Volume: Use tools like Google Search Console or your preferred keyword research tool to assess search volume. Higher volume indicates greater potential.
  • Competition: Evaluate the difficulty scores in keyword tools and the SERP to determine if you can outrank the top pages. Consider whether the existing content adequately addresses the query or has room for improvement.
  • SERP Content-Type: Analyze if the top-ranking pages are blogs and note their format (listicle, how-to, ultimate guide, etc.). Your blog should ideally match the successful content types.
  • Target Audience Appeal: Your blog should attract qualified traffic, including potential clients and link creators, such as bloggers and industry journalists. If your content appeals to these groups, it’s likely to succeed.

Finalize Your Keyword List

  • Filter through your keywords to select primary and secondary terms based on search volume, low competition, and relevance to your target audience and intent.

A Proven Process for Writing a GOOD Blog Post

Transform blog ideas with juicy keywords into compelling posts with these five steps.

1. Research and Outline: Gather your thoughts and research, then organize them into an article outline with clear headings.

2. Drafting: Write the initial draft, focusing on outlining your ideas into full paragraphs without worrying about perfection.

3. Editing and SEO Enhancement: Refine your draft for readability and flow, and use tools like Surfer for SEO optimization.

Gather and organize your research in a Google Doc or a dedicated chat with your AI tool of choice.  Conducting the research and creating an outline upfront will greatly accelerate the writing process and ensure you cover all the major themes of the article.

  • For a wider variety of images and real photography, explore stock image websites such as Envato Elements, BigSplash, or Pexels.
  • To add a dynamic element, consider embedding relevant videos from YouTube.

Formatting and Optimizing Images:

  • Ensure images are the right size for your blog layout, typically no wider than 800 pixels, to maintain fast loading times without sacrificing quality. Use free image editing tools to adjust dimensions as needed.
  • Convert images to the WebP format for an optimal balance between quality and file size, which is crucial for maintaining fast page load speeds. Name the file using a relevant SEO keyword to enhance your post’s discoverability.  For example, “woman-at-computer-doing-digital-marketing.webp”.
